https://anatolyvapirov.bandcamp.com/music Anatoly Petrovich Vapirov is a tenor and soprano saxophonist and clarinettist. He is a composer, a member of the Union of Bulgarian Composers and a musician who performs music in various styles of jazz. His range of predilections is vast - from traditional bebop to free jazz, from folk to "third stream" and avant-garde.
Vapirov began playing jazz at the Leningrad Conservatory (now St. Petersburg) in the late 1960s, and in the 1970s and 1980s he established himself as one of the world's leading contemporary jazz musicians and composers.
From an interview with A. Vapirov:
I think that in the XXI century jazz will necessarily be associated with authentic folklore, and the rest will remain in the museum of jazz. I don't want to impose my opinion on anyone, time will pass, we'll see ... After all, the main thing is not the style, but the person who presents it. In 1967, at the Tallinn Jazz Festival, at a press conference, Vilis Konoveri was asked, "What do you think of Soviet jazz?" He replied, "For me there is no such thing as American, Soviet or European jazz. There is the music of Miles Davis, Coltrane, Parker, etc. It turns out that even then, more than fifty years ago, such a vivid thought was expressed, and by whom - by an obvious apologist for American music. It was a revelation to us all, and I concluded for myself that the words "American" and "jazz" were no longer synonymous."
Vapirov is currently the author of eighty records and CDs in Russia, Bulgaria, Austria, England, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland, the United States, and Great Britain. He has participated in jazz festivals in Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, USA, France, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Greece, UK, Canada, Mexico, Israel, etc.

In 1998, the first jazz society in the country was established in the city of Varna, the example of which was later followed by several other cities with festival events.
Varna Jazz was the first in the country to destroy the centralized socialist model of cultural life and to this day, with a minimal team, maintains and develops artistic growth, unattainable for other similar forums.
Varna Municipality considers it an honour to have its Jazz Summer in the palette of summer festivals. The emphasis is on the fact that the festival is not only a 3-4-day event packed with excellent concerts.
The Jazz Fest has created a tradition in our seaside capitol of direct engagement with music in the historic setting of the English Court Archaeological Museum. With Jazz Fest, this space has established itself as an artistic venue for audiences of diverse arts connoisseurs.
Overall, the festival has become an integral part of Bulgarian culture. Holding the Varna Summer International Jazz Festival every year in Varna helps to attract mass listeners to the best examples of native and foreign music, enriches the socio-cultural environment of Bulgaria.
The main organizers of the festival to this day are Anatoly Vapirov and Varna Jazz Society in partnership with Varna Municipality and Varna Culture Fund.
The International Jazz Festival Varna Summer is always realized in cooperation with the Municipality of Varna and that is why the logo of the municipality is in the first place in all printed and promotional materials.
International Jazz Festival
A festival that annually brings together international musicians playing mostly free, made-in-the-moment music, a festival where the free spirit of East and West, North and South meet on the shores of the Black Sea.
It is well known by the faithful jazz audience of all generations. Without them the festival would not be possible.
With so many anniversaries in European jazz (different movements, festivals, bands and artists) sprinkled like a star shower over the continent in 2023, the 32nd International Varna Jazz Fest ranks somewhat modestly at the end of the line. But if we consider it not in isolation, but as a segment of the whole (Varna Summer International Music Festival), suddenly things take on completely different dimensions.
It took many decades to break with the totalitarian regime in this country, to discover and appreciate the misrepresentation of our past and to call it by its proper name - jazz.
With such an ambition in 1992 Anatoly Vapirov tied the long broken thread and rejoined the Jazz Festival to the Varna Summer Festival.
With hand on heart and eyes wide open to the facts, we have to categorically say - this is the jazz festival in Bulgaria, the only one that selects and offers high musical art. And a continuous renewal of creativity at a time when the very notion of music has lost its aristocracy and turned into cheap entertainment for the plebs.
This is not barbecue jazz, nor poolside jazz, nor jazz among piles of straw on a windy mountain top. The naive and even infantile Bulgarian way of playing with the tourism map - domestic and international - is completely alien to both Varna Summer and Varna Jazz.
They are also alien to the inherited totalitarian forms of "summer recreation for workers" so readily used in the capital and many other cities in the country to cover up bureaucratic powerlessness.
The festival, as well as the people of Varna, remember well where and when summer seaside tourism started in the country and preserve its cultural heritage with dignity.
It is well known by the faithful jazz audience of all generations. Without them the festival would not be possible.
There is tremendous power when a group of people with similar interests come together to work towards the same goals. This is the foundation of true teamwork. If all team members are invested in the same goals, without bias or ego, nothing can stop them! Join us!
Excellent atmosphere and quality music. Check out the footage from the festival.
